Shakespeare’s Globe revives Romeo And Juliet, the Bard’s most famous love story as part of its 2009 Young Hearts season, which collects together four plays about the exuberance and exhilaration of young hearts bursting out of themselves.
Romeo And Juliet tells the famous story of two young lovers from rival families. A violent street fight precedes the moment when literature’s most famous lovers meet for the first time. Yet despite this bloody precursor and the fact that Juliet is already promised to another men in marriage, they fall hopelessly in love.
The renewal of violence between the two warring families sees any hopes of future happiness cruelly crushed before their very eyes, and while the adults are preoccupied with their own hateful affairs, a heartbreaking tragedy begins to unfold among their children.
Ellie Kendrick, who plays Juliet, recently played the title role in the BBC adaptation of The Diary Of Anne Frank.
Romeo And Juliet plays alongside As You Like It, Troilus And Cressida, Love’s Labour’s Lost, The Frontline, Helen and A New World – A Life of Thomas Paine in Shakespeare’s Globe‘s summer 2009 season.
