The final new production directed by Emma Rice as Artistic Director of the Globe, Romantics Anonymous is a funny, charming and awkward musical love story.

Adapted from the French-Belgian film Les Émotifs Anonymes written by Jean-Pierre Améris and Philippe Blasband, Romantics Anonymous’ book is written by Rice,  with lyrics by Christopher Dimond, and music by Michael Kooman.

The musical follows Angélique, a gifted chocolate maker inhibited by social anxiety, and Jean-René, the awkward boss of a struggling chocolate factory, in an unusual and tender love story about finding the courage to be happy.

Angélique makes beautiful chocolates, carefully infused with all the emotion that seems to overwhelm her in daily life. Jean-René runs a chocolate factory that is running out of steam, rather like his own existence. Both seek help from the usual sources: Jean-René favours self-help tapes and Angélique joins a support group, Les Émotifs Anonymes.

This is Dimon and Kooman’s London professional debut as musical theatre writers, with the duo also currently working on the score for an animated Disney television series.

Playing in the intimate setting of Shakespeare’s Globe’s candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse as part of the winter 2017 season, The Winter Selection, Romantics Anonymous is an unusual and tender love story in which the obstacles to happiness are not the usual external barriers, but those sneaky little ones we know all too intimately: the ones within.
