Robert Cohan is a pioneering figure in British contemporary dance. Founder Artistic Director of Contemporary Dance Trust, London Contemporary Dance Theatre and London Contemporary Dance School, Cohan was a key figure in the development of British dance. Phoenix Dance Theatre presents Forest, sinuous animal movement unfolding in continuous flow to a subtle soundscore of forest murmurs. Another classic Stabat Mater is performed by nine dancers from Ballet Theatre Munich, expressing the grief of Mary at the foot of the cross through subdued and lyrical ensemble work. Especially revived for this celebration is Cohan’s early masterpiece, the duet Eclipse. Sun/moon, man/woman mark out the ritual patterns of an impossible struggle for power. Eclipse is performed by dancers from Richard Alston Dance Company. Robert Cohan himself will also appear on stage, talking about his work and his philosophy. Perhaps too long taken for granted, now is the perfect moment to reassess this remarkable body of work.
