Jonathan Miller’s Little Italy-set staging of Rigoletto, Verdi’s opera of revenge, is revived at the London Coliseum. Originally created in 1982, Mafia-controlled New York provides a startling environment for this enduring opera of lust, deceit, kidnap and vengeance.

Celebrated baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore, who has previously sung the role of Rigoletto in Brussels, Vienna and the Netherlands, performs it for the first time on the British stage in this English National Opera production.

This production of Rigoletto also sees soprano Katherine Whyte makes her ENO debut as Gilda and 24-year-old tenor make his UK debut as the Duke of Mantua. Stephen Lord, Director of the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis also makes his UK conducting debut.

When Rigoletto was revived in 2003, The Times said of the production: “When the lightning flashes, the chorus moans, and the detritus of New York’s nocturnal Little Italy is once again whirled in the wind, this robust company revival still makes Verdi’s own magic work.”
