One of the greatest choreographers of the Romantic age, August Bournonville is credited as the founder of the Danish ballet tradition, creating a classical style which is graceful, joyful and expressive. To celebrate the bicentennial year of his birth, the principals and soloists from the Royal Danish Ballet present an evening of works that pays homage to this great choreographer. Founded in 1748, Denmark’s pre-eminent ballet company is among the world’s oldest and its dancers specialise in Bournonville’s classical choreographic style, displaying an unmatched suppleness and speed. Highlights include the Divertissement from one of his most famous works La Sylphide; Act II of Le Conservatoire (Dancing School), in which Bournonville draws on reminisces from his student days at the Paris Conservatoire in the 1820s; and the finale from Napoli Act III, Bournonville’s magnificent tale of Italian folklore, seduction and romantic love.
