Didy Veldman is perhaps best known for her Carmen for Northern Ballet Theatre, and for producing work for Rambert. In See Blue Through she is inspired by the mysteries of underwater life. In a visually stunning set, flashes of movement are reflected in an array of suspended mirrors, evoking the broken surface of the sea, while shafts of light recreate an underwater world.
In his new piece, Artistic Director, Darshan Singh Bhuller pushes the relationship between live performance and film. The stage is flooded with multimedia projections that form more than a mere backdrop. Computer generated graphics respond and react to the dancers, in a true integration of technology and raw physicality. Drawing further on contemporary urban culture, DJ Max Blessed provides an eclectic mixed soundtrack. Phoenix have also been granted the rare privilege of staging Forest by Robert Cohan, founder of The Place and London Contemporary Dance Theatre and former dancer with Martha Graham. Although technically demanding, the movement flows in continuous, dreamlike succession, creating a beautiful dance spectacle.
