Performance tells the story of a family of musicians. Antonia and her father, Edward, have not spoken for 20 years, and as far as Lydia, Antonia’s daughter, is concerned, the mysterious composer who was her grandfather is long dead. So when 25-year-old Lydia, a concert violinist practising for the most important performance of her young career, discovers to her shock that he is still alive, she confronts her mother and demands to know the truh. But the secret Antonia has been hiding is darker than she could have expected. Edward has Huntington’s Disease, and so, therefore, might Antonia; and so too could Lydia.
Leggett’s previous plays include Lullaby, Smoking Kills and Goldfish.
