Over There is Mark Ravenhill’s visceral new play examining the hungers released when two countries, separated by a common language, meet again.

When Franz’s mother escaped to the West with one of her identical twin boys, she left the other behind in East Germany. Now, 25 years later, Karl crosses the border in search of his other half. As history takes an unexpected turn, the brothers must struggle to reconnect.

Over There playwright Ravenhill has a reputation for producing thought-provoking and often shocking material for the stage. He emerging onto the British theatre scene in the 1990s when his first full length piece, Shopping And F***ing was staged at the Royal Court. Since then his plays have included Some Explicit Polaroids, Mother Clap’s Molly House, The Cut, Pool (no water), last years series of short pieces Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat and the Barbican Theatre’s 2006 pantomime Dick Whittington And His Cat.

Royal Court Associate Director Ramin Gray, who previously directed The Ugly One, directs Over There. Among his other credits are The Arsonists, Motortown and Woman And Scarecrow.

Over There plays at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Downstairs as part of Off The Wall, as season of new plays about Germany marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Also included in the season are Marius von Mayenburg’s The Stone and a series of readings of new plays by German writers.
