Written in 1607, Monteverdi’s Orfeo is based on the Greek myth of Orpheus. From an idyllic opening on Orpheus’ wedding day, tragedy quickly strikes – his beloved Eurydice is dead. Orpheus’ love for her is so strong that he ventures into the underworld to bring her back, but he can only do so on one condition: that he promises not to look at Eurydice before they have left the abyss. If he does, he will lose her for ever…
Orfeo is performed by students from the Trinity College of Music.
