Nihon Buyo is the oldest form of Japanese traditional dance, first recorded in the ‘Kojiki’ History in 712 AD. Today its great heritage is upheld by a devoted group of performers who continue to teach and perform these elegant and meditative masterpieces, thus offering a vital counterpoint to the hectic pace of modern Japanese life.

Comprising some of Japan’s leading dancers, the Nihon Buyo company visits London for the first time with a diverse programme illustrating the full range of the art form. These include picturesque solo works and a samurai drama, Samurai Naozane.

The performances are led by Senzo Nishikawa, chairman of the Nihon Buyo Foundation and one of only three Japanese traditional dancers to have been awarded the status of ‘Living National Treasure’.

Emphasizing classical purity and grace, the movement of Nihon Buyo is accompanied by an orchestra of 14 musicians.
