When a husband and father returns to his family from war, he does not find things as he remembered them. In peace-time, the poor and starving are left to rebuild their lives.

Zinnie Harris’ play “was written when the world seemed to be falling around me – Britain was about to go to war with Iraq, SARS was going to get us and dangers seemed everywhere. The only response I could make was to hold my new born baby very tight and wish it all away.” Harris, who also directs the production, is a former RSC Writer in Residence whose previous plays include Nightingale, Chase and Further Than The Furthest Thing.

Midwinter is the first of the RSC’s New Work season to transfer to Soho and runs in rep with Poor Beck. Its cast is drawn from the RSC’s Tragedies season at the Albery.
