Handel’s famous oratorio Messiah is staged at the London Coliseum to mark the 250th anniversary of the composer’s death.

Director Deborah Warner’s staging of Messiah, one of the most popular choral pieces in the repertoire, promises to explore the profundities and hidden meanings of the work, touching on good and evil, the past and the future, and the belief in the final victory over sin, death and decay. Warner’s previous work for English National Opera includes 2000’s St John Passion and 2007’s Death In Venice.

John Mark Ainsley, who sings the tenor part in Messiah, returns to ENO following his highly acclaimed performances in the 2008 production of Partenope. He was previously nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for his portrayal in the title role of Orfeo.

Ainsley is joined in the all-British leading quartet of singers by Sophie Bevan (Soprano), Catherine Wyn Rogers (Alto) and Brindley Sherratt (Bass).
