Verdi’s Requiem comes to the Royal Opera House in a concert conducted by Antonio Pappano, Music Director of the Royal Opera, with the orchestra of the Royal Opera House and The Royal Opera Chorus.

Joining them for this one-off performance are four world-class soloists in this repertory: Barbara Frittoli, Olga Borodina and Piotr Beczala with the Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov making his Royal Opera debut.

The drama of the setting and the poignant themes of the text are beautifully evoked in the work Verdi wrote to mark the first anniversary of the death of the Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni. He drew together the combined forces of four soloists, double chorus and a large orchestra – with additional brass both terrifying and resplendent in effect – to make a monumental work that remains extraordinarily powerful today.

Ranging from its very famous and forceful Dies Irae through the simplicity of the Agnus Dei to the joyful Sanctus, Requiem is a work of dramatic contrasts, from beautiful melody to driving rhythm. This concert puts the world-class musical talent that the Royal Opera House commands clearly on display for one special and stunning performance.
