Kenneth MacMillan’s best-known work sets a version of Abbé Prévost’s Manon Lescaut to the music of Jules Massenet.
Though she is attracted by the love of student Des Grieux, Manon cannot resist the lure of Monsier GM’s wealth. But when she incurs the wrath of Monsier GM, Manon is sent to New Orleans to begin a new life as a prostitue, where she is humiliated further by the lecherous Gaoler. Saved by Des Grieux, in delirium she relives the folly of her life before her life slips away in the arms of her lover.
