Ralph Fiennes stars as Jack Tanner, a celebrated radical thinker and rich bachelor who seems an unlikely choice as guardian to the alluring heiress, Ann. But she takes it in her assured stride and, despite the love of a poet, she decides to marry and tame this dazzling revolutionary.

Tanner, appalled by the whiff of domesticity, is tipped off by his chauffeur and flees to Spain, where he is captured by bandits and meets The Devil. An extraordinary dream-debate, heaven versus hell, ensues.

This exhilarating reinvention of George Bernard Shaw’s witty, provocative classic is directed by Simon Godwin. Godwin made his National Theatre debut in 2013 with the critically acclaimed Strange Interlude.

Fiennes returns to the National Theatre following credits in Oedipus, The Talking Cure, Six Characters In Search Of An Author, Fathers And Sons and Ting Tang Mine. The Academy Award nominated actor’s extensive film credits include the Harry Potter series, The English Patient and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
