ENO reaffirms its strong historical association with the music of Janácek by mounting a poignant new presentation of The Makropulos Case, fittingly conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras, a world-leading specialist in the Czech repertory. Highlighting the grand emotional drama of Janácek’s penultimate opera, director Christopher Alden deftly explores the work’s psychological themes, creating a dream-like vision of Prague in the 1920s. The mesmerizing opera diva Emilia Marty is brought to life by Cheryl Barker, in her role debut, while American tenor Robert Brubaker appears as Albert Gregor, a character he has sung at The Metropolitan Opera to great acclaim.
