Major Barbara is major Shaw, first presented in 1905 at the Royal Court Theatre, it explores the conflict between idealism and practicality “…you have made for yourself something that you call a morality or a religion or what not. It doesn’t fit the facts. Well, scrap it. Scrap it and get one that does fit.” This is a play about power in which Major Barbara of the Salvation Army finds herself in conflict with her father, Andrew Undershaft, an unashamed maker of canons – “nothing is ever done in this world until men are prepared to kill one another if it is not done”. And there is her formidable mother, her Professor of Greek fiancé, and all those in need down at the salvation shelter. Shaw at his provocative best.
