Giacomo Puccini’s heart-shattering score in Madam Butterfly returns to the London Coliseum in one of opera’s most famous and revered tales of unrequited love.
With a magnificent cast led by American soprano Rena Harms and British tenor David Butt Philip, Madam Butterfly tells the story of Cio-Cio San, a young Japanese woman who falls hopelessly in love with American officer Lieutenant Pinkerton. But shortly after their marriage, he deserts her and returns to his homeland.
Yet her faith in his eventual return remains unshaking. For days, weeks and months she waits for him, purely out of belief for their love. He will return: she knows he will.
Embracing an utterly spectacular vision, Anthony Minghella’s Oliver Award-winning production is revived in beautiful fashion, embellishing the stage with a breath-taking mix of cinematic images, traditional Japanese theatre, colourful costumes and stunning sets.
Sung in English, with surtitles projected above the stage.
