Anthony Minghella’s Olivier Award-winning production of Puccini’s classic Madam Butterfly is revived by English National Opera.
Minghella mixed cinematic images with traditional Japanese theatre, puppetry and strikingly colourful costumes to tell Madam Butterfly’s story.
Puccini’s timeless tragedy finds US naval lieutenant FB Pinkerton living in a world where little matters more than personal satisfaction, so his liaison with a young geisha is, to him, nothing more than a dalliance. For her it is very real and leads to family rejection. When Pinkerton leaves, the Geisha, Madam Butterfly, refuses to accept the truth.
Mary Plazas, who originally played Madam Butterfly in Minghella’s production, returns to the role.
