South African director Brett Bailey presents a new production of Verdi’s Macbeth, setting Shakespeare’s tale of an ambitious soldier amid refugees from the Congo.
As the refugees flee, they come across a truck containing Verdi’s sheet music and gramophone recordings of the opera. Inspired they tell their own version of the story in which a warlord and his wife seize power in an area where the militia fight over mineral resources.
Bold visuals and a reconstructed score combine in this production that is suitable for theatergoers aged 12 and older.
Macbeth is performed in Italian with English surtitles.
