Love Counts details the unlikely liaison between Avril, a university mathematics lecturer, and Patsy, a middle weight fighter at the end of his career, who cannot read or recognise numbers. With no education outside the boxing ring, he can barely write his name. From a chance encounter, a friendship develops. Learning that the muscles and mumbling mask a gentle character, Avril falls in love – an intense bond based on trust and surrender, on numbers and honesty. But, will it be enough to keep him away from the ring? This two-hander stars Andrew Slater (last seen at the Almeida in Simon Holt’s Who Put Bella In The Wych Elm?) as Patsy, and Helen Williams, recently much praised as the Queen Of The Night at Opera North, as Avril.
