Le Malade Imaginaire was Molière’s last play – the author died shortly after suffering a serious seizure while playing the lead role in the King’s presence.
The play was a biting satire inspired by personal experience of a criminally incompetent medical professon. The comedy of the piece also depends in large measure on the ridiculous figure of a man with too much money for his own good, obsessed with imaginary ailments. Despite this potentially serious underpinning, this is one of Molière’s funniest farces, filled with knockabout comedy that will have you in stitches!
Something Wicked injects new life into this hilarious classic by stripping it out of its seventeenth-century context without trapping the play’s timeless message in any other period, historical or modern.
