The English National Opera presents the world-famous and much-loved La Traviata – a tragic love story set against the hypocrisy of upper-class society.

La Traviata tells the story of the courtesan Violetta who sacrifices her fame and position in Parisian society to pursue a life with the Alfredo Germont. But when the lovers break society’s conventions and threaten to shame Alfredo’s family, his father makes an unexpected visit. Alfredo’s father asks Violetta to relinquish her one chance of happiness leading her to sacrifice more than just her happiness.

Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata is inspired by Alexandre Dimas fils’ play La Dame Aux Camélias. Alexandre’s play was based on the life of Marie Duplessis – a young courtesan who became Alexandre’s mistress and died of tuberculosis at just 23 years old.

The tragic opera is one of the world’s most beloved and well-known. Its impeccable score is recognised the world over, even by those who have not experienced the opera. It is often cited as one of the most iconic, romantic and tragic scores of all time.

Verdi’s incredible score, along with its taut plot and vivid characters means there’s rarely a dry eye in the house. Featuring wild party scenes as well as tender, intimate moments, you’ll experience all manner of emotions while watching La Traviata.

This is Daniel Kramer’s debut production as ENO Artistic Director. Young soprano Claudia Boyle will be performing as Violetta, with tenor Lukhanyo Moyake portraying Alfredo, in his UK debut. Conductor Leo McFall makes his ENO debut in a production that showcases the award-winning ENO Chorus and Orchestra.
