Performed in Afrikaans with English surtitles, Koos Sas: Last Bushman Of Montagu centres on the notorious and infamous Khoisan, Koos Sas, who was accused of murdering a shopkeeper in Montagu, South Africa, in 1917. Shot as an outlaw, he was the last of what the authorities considered to be ‘bushmen robbers’ of the previous century.

David Kramer’s new musical piece reimagines Koos Sas as a rebellious hero, a thorn in the side of the farmers and the state.  Koos Sas: Last Bushman Of Montagu is a love story played out against the background of racism and subjugation, a celebration of pre-industrial innocence. 

Writer, director and composer Kramer is one of South Africa’s foremost artists whose work in musical theatre explores South Africa’s identity and political history. He frequently collaborated with the late Taliep Peterson, on works including Kat And The Kings, which was produced at the Tricycle theatre and went on to win a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Their other work includes Spice Drum Beat: Ghoema, Poison and District Six. As a composer Kramer has been entered into the South African Composers Hall Of Fame.
