Opera North, with their full-scale orchestra and chorus in tow, bring the magical sound of Broadway to the London Coliseum with Kiss Me, Kate.
Cole Porter’s riotously inventive homage to the sparkling wit of William Shakespeare, Kiss Me, Kate is an irresistible celebration of the joy and madness of working in theatre. With show-stopping songs including ‘Brush Up Your Shakespeare,’ ‘Always True To You In My Fashion’ and ‘So In Love,’ performed by an all-singing, all-dancing cast of international singers and West End stars, this spectacular new production is simply ‘Too Darn Hot’ to miss out on.
Set both on and off-stage during the production of a musical version of The Taming Of The Shrew by William Shakespeare in 1940s Baltimore, Kiss Me, Kate revolves around the tempestuous love lives of actor-manager Fred Graham and his leading lady and ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi. Throw in Fred’s current paramour Lois Lane, her gambler boyfriend Bill – and a couple of gangsters who somehow get caught up in the show – and the stage is set for a funny and farcical battle of the sexes!
Bringing together performers from the worlds of both opera and the West End, with the incredible sound of the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North, the magical sound of Broadway and the golden age of MGM musicals springs back to life on the Coliseum stage.
Kiss Me, Kate is a musical written by Samuel and Bella Spewack with music and lyrics by Cole Porter.
Kiss Me, Kate was Cole Porter’s response to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! and other integrated musicals; it was the first show he wrote in which the music and lyrics were firmly connected to the script, and it proved to be his biggest hit and the only one of his shows to run for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway. In 1949, it won the first Tony Award presented for Best Musical.
This production is brought to you by Opera North, England’s national opera company in the North and one of Europe’s leading arts organisations.
Don’t miss this fantastic production of Kiss Me, Kate at the London Coliseum. Running from 20 June – 30 June 2018.
