Following its sold-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre, Jonathan Munby’s explosive revival of Shakespeare’s epic tragedy moves to the West End with a celebrated cast led by Ian McKellen as the embittered monarch in a fractured kingdom.

With its intimate staging, this contemporary, dystopian production places audiences at the centre of the storm as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with shocking ends.

One of the country’s greatest acting talents, Ian McKellen started his career in repertory theatres across the country before making a name for himself with the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company in leading roles. On screen, he is known for his roles such as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and Magneto in the X-Men film series.

He plays the title character in King Lear, which has previously said is likely to be his ‘last big Shakespeare part’. McKellen’s performance, which sees Lear descend into madness as he divides his kingdom amongst his children, was hailed by critics and audiences alike during its original run in Chichester.

The cast for King Lear also includes Sinéad Cusack, Danny Webb, Kirsty Bushell, James Corrigan, Lloyd Hutchinson and Claire Price.
