Kabuki dates back to the early 17th century, and is a highly stylised art which brings together extravagant costumes, elaborate make-up and exaggerated body movements, creating a sense of the spectacular. At Sadler’s Wells it is performed, accompanied by live traditional music, by Japanese superstar of Kabuki Ebizo XI. Ebizo XI is the eleventh generation of the Ichikawa family to perform Kabuki since 1673. He is joined on stage by a cast of 30 actors and musicians.

The programme includes two classic works: Fuji Musume, in which The Wisteria Maiden dances against a stunning backdrop of wisteria flowers; and the contrasting Kasane, which is a dramatic tale of love, murder and revenge.
