Kenneth Branagh stars in the title role of Chekhov’s early drama, Ivanov, in a new version by Tom Stoppard.
Nikolai Ivanov is an intelligent man caught up in a provincial life in Russia, deep in debt and with a terminally ill wife. His turmoil is compounded when he finds himself attracted to a beautiful young neighbour, Sasha. Disgusted by his own behaviour and hounded by his wife’s young, idealistic doctor, Ivanov is driven into torment.
Branagh, making his long-awaited return to the West End stage, leads a stellar cast that includes Gina McKee (The Lover & The Collection on stage, TV’s Our Friends In The North) as Ivanov’s wife Anna, this year’s Best Newcomer Laurence Olivier Award-winner Tom Hiddleston as Lvov and rising star Andrea Riseborough as Sasha.
This is the first production in the Donmar Warehouse’s year-long residency at the Wyndham’s theatre in the West End. For more information, read our First Night Feature or our Big Interview with Tom Hiddleston.
