Two modern classics combine in a programme of dramatic twists.

Luciano Berio’s Recital 1 sets the solo singer in a situation that turns into a nightmare: she is ready to perform, but no pianist has arrived to accompany her. The resulting work has all the exuberance and daring typical of the composer’s creative wit as the singer attempts to carry on while her mental state deteriorates.

In George Benjamin’s Into The Little Hill, two singers act out a sometimes disturbing interpretation of the fable of the Pied Piper, in which a stranger first charms away from a town its plague of rats, before exacting a heavy price when political promises are not kept.
