Mark Benton takes on the role of the hypocritical boot maker at the heart of Harold Brighouse’s family drama Hobson’s Choice.
Set in 1880s Salford, Hobson’s Choice charts the story of cobbler Henry Hobson whose three daughters work unpaid in his shop. After imposing a ‘no marriages’ rule to avoid the expense of settlements, his eldest daughter Maggie rebels and sets her sights on one of her father’s boot makers.
Benton, who was recently seen on the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing, returns to the London stage following performances in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Richard III and The Front Page at the Donmar Warehouse. On screen, he is best known for his roles in television series including Waterloo Road, Northern Lights and Early Doors.
He is joined in the cast by Jodie McNee as Maggie. Her theatre credits include King Lear at Shakespeare’s Globe and The Empty Quarter at the Hampstead Theatre.
The production is directed by Nadia Fall, whose previous productions include The Doctor’s Dilemma and Home at the National Theatre.
