Maria Friedman follows her Olivier Award-winning production of Merrily We Roll Along with Cole Porter’s classic feel-good musical High Society.
A glittering new production staged in-the-round, High Society is based on Philip Barry’s The Philadelphia Story and the 1956 MGM musical film starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra.
It tells the story of Long Island socialite Tracy Lord who is in the midst of planning her lavish summer wedding when her ex-husband turns up in an attempt to try to win her back. His unwelcome arrival threatens to disrupt proceedings but when tabloid reporter Mike Connor arrives to cover the nuptials he too takes a shine to the bride-to-be. Which of these three suitors will she choose?
The production is directed by musical theatre star Friedman, whose acclaimed production of Merrily We Roll Along at the Menier Chocolate Factory and in the West End took home the Best Musical Revival Award at 2014’s Olivier Awards with MasterCard.
On stage Friedman has won Olivier Awards for her performances in Ragtime and Passion, and for her show Maria Friedman – By Special Arrangement.
High Society is the final production in a season of shows, which included The Crucible, Electra and Clarence Darrow, staged in-the-round at the Old Vic.
