Brother and sister Hansel and Gretel have been abandoned by their cold-hearted stepmother and cowardly father. Deep in a frightening forest and trying to find their way home, the children discover the sweetest of houses. Surely no-one would mind if two hungry children had just one little nibble?

For Christmas 2008, the Barbican theatre has been transformed for a promenade performance. As the audience walks through the wintry world of Hansel And Gretel, it is taken on a journey through an eerie forest into a tempting sweetie house where someone is waiting…

Hansel And Gretel is based on the play Home – East Lothian, which was created by the Artistic Director of Catherine Wheels Theatre Company, Gill Robertson, in 2006, as part of the National Theatre of Scotland’s inaugural season. The production went on to win two Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS), in the categories of Best Show For Children And Young People and Best Design.

The story of Hansel And Gretel is one of the most famous to come from the minds of The Brothers Grimm, the storytellers behind such fairytales as Rumplestiltskin, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Cinderella.

A spine-chilling adventure for children, Hansel And Gretel is suitable for theatregoers aged eight and older. As it is a promenade performance, audiences will be required to walk round the set. Seating will be available at different points throughout.
