Based on the true life memoirs of legendary burlesque entertainer, Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy tells the tale of Momma Rose and her two daughters, Baby June and Louise, trekking across America in their family vaudeville act.
As times change, Momma Rose is forced to accept the demise of vaudeville and the rise of burlesque, as well as her daughters’ quest for autonomy.
Often cited as one of Broadway’s greatest musicals, Gypsy features lyrics by the legendary Stephen Sondheim, a book by West Side Story’s Arthur Laurents and music by Jule Styne.
Transferring following its five-star hit run at Chichester Festival Theatre, Gypsy stars multi award-winning actor Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake, Harry Potter, Pride) who returns to the London stage following Hampstead Theatre’s hit Good People.
The production marks the reunion of Staunton and director Jonathan Kent following their hugely successful collaboration on Sweeney Todd.
Gypsy features a classic score of hits including Everything’s Coming Up Roses, Small World, Let Me Entertain You and Together (Wherever We Go).
