After a smash-hit five-star run at the Savoy earlier this year, the effervescent Chichester Festival Theatre production of this beloved musical comedy classic extends its West End run at the Phoenix Theatre.
Based on stories and characters by Damon Runyon, Guys And Dolls follows the notorious Nathan Detroit in his efforts to scramble together money to host an illegal dice game. Nathan must juggle this pressure with a 14-year engagement with nightclub singer Miss Adelaide, whose patience is finally running out.
Cue notorious gambler Sky Masterson, a guy who can never turn down a bet, and straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown, a doll with a heart of ice. Nathan’s wager is that Sky has to romance Sarah by taking her to Havana for dinner and in return he’ll provide a dozen ‘sinners’ for Sarah’s mission. Surely this is one bet Nathan absolutely can’t lose?
Official London Theatre’s Kate Stanbury described the Savoy Theatre production as “something close to pure musical perfection”, declaring it “a joyous and vibrant production that is everything you could ever hope for from a classic musical revival.”
A joyous and vibrant celebration of Prohibition era New York, Guys And Dolls first premiered on Broadway in 1950. This production premiered at the Chichester Festival Theatre in August 2014, with casting of the Phoenix Theatre to be announced.
The musical features music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, with a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows.
