New drama Foreplay is an adaptation of La Ronde, updating the action to contemporary South Africa obsessed with sex and violence, where AIDS is still taking too many lives.
In 2006 Township Stories, a previous piece by Foreplay playwright Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom, was described by The Guardian’s Lyn Gardner as “one of the most remarkable pieces of theatre to emerge from post-apartheid South Africa”. Foreplay is written in the same gripping, raw style.
Presented by the South African State Theatre, where it opened in March, Foreplay plays at the Theatre Royal Stratford East as part of an international tour.
Please note, Foreplay contains very strong language and scenes of a sexual nature.
