Enjoy is the story of ageing couple, Wilf and Connie, who are living in the city’s last back-to-back home. With the demolition of the area in progress, they are soon to be re-housed in a new maisonette with a waste disposal unit and non-slip vinyl flooring! When a sociologist comes to observe them in their daily life, normality takes a decidedly atypical turn.   

First staged in 1980, when it became Alan Bennett’s first theatrical failure, Enjoy was revived in the summer of 2008 as part of the Peter Hall season at the Theatre Royal Bath. It has since enjoyed a regional tour and comes to London’s Gielgud theatre for a limited 14-week run.

The cast of Enjoy is led by renowned stage and screen actress Alison Steadman, who won a coveted Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice. Her stage triumphs also include the creation of the monstrous Beverly in Mike Leigh’s seminal play Abigail’s Party. Steadman also worked with Leigh on the films Life Is Sweet and Topsy Turvy. On television her credits include Fat Friends, Pride And Prejudice and Gavin And Stacey.

Experienced classical actor David Troughton joins Steadman in the cast of Enjoy. A performer with a long list of credits with companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, Troughton has played roles from Henry IV and The Tempest’s Caliban to Peter Pan’s Captain Hook. On television he has appeared in series including Casualty 1907, New Tricks and A Very Peculiar Practice.

Reviewing Enjoy when it was staged in Bath, Guardian theatre critic Michael Billington said: “The performances are just about perfect.”
