Two of the most expressionistic works of the 20th century, Duke Bluebeard’s Castle and The Rite Of Spring, are brought together in a double bill.
Daniel Kramer, who won a South Bank Show Award for his 2008 version of Punch And Judy, a co-production between English National Opera and the Young Vic, makes his debut at the London Coliseum with Duke Bluebeard’s Castle. Bartok’s only opera is based on a fairytale by Charles Perrault and features only two characters, Duke Bluebeard and new wife Judith. This production features Michaela Martens as the wife entering the castle for the first time and sacrificing herself to unlock the bloody secrets of Duke Bluebeard’s Past.
The Rite Of Spring is performed by daring, original company Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, and directed by Irish director/choreographer Michael Keegan-Dolan. Stravinsky’s dark, ritualistic ballet tells the story of a young girl sacrificed for her community’s future.
ENO’s Laurence Olivier Award-winning Music Director Edward Gardner conducts Duke Bluebeard’s Castle / The Rite Of Spring.
