The iconic Tony and Olivier Award®-winning musical Dreamgirls invites your soul to soar at the Savoy Theatre, transporting audiences to a revolutionary time in American music history.
Drawing inspiration from the career stories of R&B acts including James Brown, Jackie Wilson and The Shirelles, and thirty-five years after the groundbreaking original Broadway production, Dreamgirls follows the tumultuous journey of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois, called ‘The Dreams’.
Through their rollercoaster ride to the top of the charts, the trio soon learn the hard lesson that show business can often be as tough as it is fabulous, and stardom isn’t always as glamorous as it initially seems. With an extraordinary story and the unforgettable, spine-tingling vocals that are sending audiences wild at every single show, this spectacular musical production soars with composer Henry Krieger’s classic songs: And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, I Am Changing, Listen, One Night Only and more.
The Dreamgirls musical first opened at the Imperial Theatre, Broadway in the December 1981. The production was directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett, and starred Sheryl Lee Ralph as Deena Jones, Jennifer Holliday as Effie White, Loretta Devine as Lorrell Robinson, going on to claim six Tony Award wins – but until this West End production, it had never reached London audiences. The production recently announced that it will play its final performance on Saturday 12 January 2019.
In 2006, Dreamworks Pictures and Paramount Pictures produced and released the film version, which won three Golden Globes and two Oscars and starred Beyoncé Knowles, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Jenifer Hudson.
Finally, in 2016, the UK and West End premiere of the iconic musical came to fruition in London with this production, originally led by Glee star Amber Riley, before Marisha Wallace, Moya Angela and Karen Mav assumed her role as Effie White in November 2017. The three power-house actresses all share the role at different performances throughout the week.
Dreamgirls in the West End was nominated for five Olivier Awards at the 2017 ceremony including Mastercard Best New Musical, winning two. The show is directed and choreographed by the hugely successful Tony® and Olivier Award-winning Casey Nicholaw, who headed up The Book Of Mormon, Disney’s Aladdin and Something Rotten!.
Let your soul sing with the dazzling multi-award winning musical Dreamgirls, now playing at the Savoy Theatre, London until 12 January 2019!
