Molière's 17th century tale of the legendary hedonist is updated, in Patrick Marber's new version, to 21st century Soho: swank, new hotels and festering, old clip joints, crackheads in alleys and cokeheads in clubs. The destitute, the delirious, the broken and the brazen, the hustlers and hoorays, the media movers and merciless whores – all packed in to one seething square mile.
The Donmar Warehouse's Artistic Director Michael Grandage directs Rhys Ifans as the infamous lothario in this world premiere. Ifans is probably best known for playing Hugh Grant's flatmate Spike in Notting Hill, since which his film career has gone from strength to strength. He has previously appeared at the Donmar in 2003's Accidental Death Of An Anarchist, and has also performed at the Royal Court and the National.
