John F. Macfarlane’s elegantly dark designs heighten the Enlightenment symbolism of David McVicar’s thoughtful and evocative interpretation, new in the 2002/3 Season. Simon Keenlyside (Papageno) and Will Hartmann (Tamino) return to this production, while Rebecca Evans (Pamina) makes her first Covent Garden appearance in the role. Jan-Hendrik Rootering made his Company debut in 1985 as the sagacious Sarastro, and appears for the first time in this production. Sung in German with English surtitles.
