An intense new production of Wagner’s great opera Der Fliegende Hollander.

Tim Albery’s interpretation of Wagner’s early masterpiece of the supernatural in conflict with the human takes its lead from the claustrophobic life of a northern fishing town dominated by the sea, its trawlers and the men who follow the hard life on board. Into the midst of this closed community comes an enigmatic stranger who seems to offer Senta an escape from her oppressive world.

For the first time at the Royal Opera House, Bryn Terfel sings the title role of the cursed wanderer, for which he has already been acclaimed, and Anja Kampe makes her Royal Opera debut as Senta, who may offer the Dutchman the chance of redemption.

The orchestra of the Royal Opera House is under the direction of Marc Albrecht for the first time.
