Maureen Lipman and Harry Shearer star in Daytona, a play with two love stories at its heart.
Written by the third member of its cast, Daytona tells a story set in New York in the mid-80s. Ballroom dancing fans Joe (Shearer) and Elli (Lipman) are preparing for an upcoming competition. Despite ongoing bickering, after nearly 50 years together their love is as strong as ever. But when Joe’s brother Billy (Cotton) bursts back onto the scene unheralded, he brings with him an extraordinary story.
Daytona was first seen at London’s Park Theatre in 2013, when it starred both Lipman and Shearer.
Much loved British actress Lipman boasts stage work including National Theatre productions of Oklahoma!, Macbeth and Long Day’s Journey Into Night, but is probably best known for her TV work including Ladies Of Letters, He Kills Coppers and Sensitive Skin.
Shearer, who makes his West End stage debut in Daytona, has one of the world’s most recognisable voices, having created characters including Mr Burns and Principal Skinner in The Simpsons. He also co-created and starred in cult classic movie This Is Spinal Tap.
