The ground-breaking play A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg is revived in the West End, starring Claire Skinner, Toby Stephens, Patricia Hodge and Storme Toolis.

Peter Nichols’ funny and moving play was first performed in the 1960s, becoming an instant classic with its challenging and emotionally-charged account of the power of family. A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg will be directed by Simon Evans (Killer Joe), and marks the play’s first West End revival since 2001.

The show centres on Bri (Toby Stephens) and Sheila (Claire Skinner), a couple struggling to cope with caring for their disabled 10-year-old daughter, Josephine (Storme Toolis). To escape from the struggle of their daily reality, Bri and Sheila nickname her “Joe Egg” and lose themselves in fantasy games and black humour. But the limits of love and family – and our assumptions of their strength – will be severely tested.

This production marks the first time ever a West End production of A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg has featured a disabled actor in the part of Joe Egg, as Storme Toolis herself has cerebral palsy.

A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg was based on Nichols’ own experiences of bringing up his disabled daughter in the 1960s. By turns startlingly funny, but also tragic, the show became a huge hit for its truthful but heart-warming nature.

The production reunites stars Stephens and Skinner for the first time since they appeared together, 18 years ago, in the award-winning BBC drama Perfect Strangers. It is the first time that the duo have performed together on stage.
