Tanya Ronder’s adaptation of Shahid Nadeem’s intense domestic drama, set in the imperial court of Mughal India, comes to the National Theatre.

Dara charts the story of two brothers, both of whom are the heirs to the Muslim empire, as the fight ferociously for succession. Dara, the crown prince, has the love of the people – and of his emperor father – but his younger brother Aurangzeb holds a different vision for India’s future.

Islam inspires poetry in Dara but puritanical rigour in Aurangzeb. Can their beloved sister Jahanara resolve to seize the Peacock Throne and purge the empire?

Dara was originally performed at the Ajoka Theatre in Pakistan, for which playwright Nadeem is co-founder and Executive Director.

The production is directed by Nadia Fall, whose productions for the National Theatre include Homes, The Doctor’s Dilemma and Chewing Gum Dreams.

The cast includes Nathalie Armin, Rudi Dharmalingam, Vincent Ebrahim, Ranjit Krishnamma, Anjli Mohindra, Anneika Rose, Chook Sibtain and Anjana Vasan.
