Mozart’s comic opera sees two men bet the cynical don Alfonso that their respective wives-to-be would not stray from the path of righteousness. Cunningly disguised, the two men inadvisably attempt to woo each other’s fiancées; everything ends in tears before it is finally resolved.
Warchus’s thoughtful and imaginative production blends Mozart’s ravishing music with glorious ensembles and sets tinged with sepia. Conductor Edward Gardner and tenor Gregory Turay make their ENO debut with this production.
