Artistic Director Mauro Bigonzetti has developed a style which brims with inventiveness. Fusing an exciting modern outlook to accomplished classical technique, he has created works for the Kirov Ballet, English National Ballet and most recently New York City Ballet. His work is always innovative, expressive and unmistakably Italian! Using free and spontaneous movement, Bigonzetti’s Cantata bursts with the passion, colour and wild beauty of Southern Italy. Mediterranean culture is captured in the notes and lyrics of traditional songs performed live by the four female singers of Gruppo Musicale Assurd. In deliberate contrast his Les Noces is rhythmic and precise, with the rigid movements taking on a sculptural quality. Constantly driven on by Igor Stravinsky’s percussive score, the 19 dancers unite in this dramatic work, heightened by stylized monochromatic costumes and set.
