Following its acclaimed 35th anniversary production last year, Kevin Elyot’s Coming Clean is set to break hearts as it returns to the West End at Trafalgar Studios.

A remarkably earnest and enrapturing play, Coming Clean looks at the gradual breakdown of a gay couple’s relationship, exploring the often self-contradictory themes of fidelity and love. The play won Elyot the Samuel Beckett Award for promising writers upon its London premiere at the Bush Theatre in 1982. Last time it came to the West End, Coming Clean tickets flew off the shelves.

Coming Clean is set in a North London flat in Kentish Town. In it resides a seemingly perfect couple – writer Tony, and partner of five years, Greg. Such is their commitment to one another, both are open to one-night stands as long as they don’t impinge on their own relationship. But when Tony begins to yearn for monogamy, unsettling past relationships are revealed, and their differing attitudes towards love and commitment become clear.

Coming Clean was revived at the King’s Head Theatre by artistic director Adam Spreadbury-Maher in 2017. This was the first London revival of the show since its award-winning premiere. It subsequently transferred to Trafalgar Studios in early 2019. Spreadbury-Maher’s recent hit productions include the European premiere of Tommy Murphy’s Strangers In Between, La Bohème and Trainspotting.
