Ephesus and Syracuse – two cities embroiled in bitter rivalry. Both have passed laws which put any man from the rival city to death unless he is able to raise a ransom of 1000 marks. When Egeon, a merchant from Syracuse, finds himself a prisoner in Ephesus, his only chance of escape is to tell the tale of his twin sons, separated in their infancy by a shipwreck, along with their twin servants… Meanwhile, Egeon’s son Antipholus arrives in Ephesus with his servant Dromio, also in search of his long lost brother. Unbeknownst to him, his twin brother is also known as Antipholus, and his servant (twin brother of Dromio) is also known as Dromio! What entails is a mad comedy of mistaken identity and comic confusion – until both sets of twins are finally and happily reunited. Northern Broadsides are touring Comedy of Errors in repertory with Alan Plater’s Sweet William.
