Old Vic Artistic Director Kevin Spacey plays legendary lawyer Clarence Darrow in this compelling one man show.
As Darrow, Spacey employs the lawman’s renowned wit as he recounts a collection of the most pivotal moments in the pioneer’s life. From the infamous Scopes ‘Monkey’ to the ‘Thrill Killers’ trials, the play explores the events that built Darrow’s reputation as a courtroom icon and civil rights hero.
This production marks the third time that Hollywood star Spacey has played Darrow, having previously portrayed the lawyer at the Old Vic in Inherit The Wind and on the big screen in Darrow.
Spacey’s London theatre career includes performances in Richard III, Speed-the-Plow, A Moon For The Misbegotten and The Iceman Cometh, for which he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor. On film his work includes American Beauty, The Usual Suspects and La Confidential. He also leads the cast of hit Netflix series House Of Cards.
Clarence Darrow is directed by Old Vic Associate Thea Sharrock, whose production of The Bodyguard is currently running at the Adelphi Theatre. Sharrock returns to the Old Vic after previously directing Cause Célèbre at the Waterloo venue in 2011. Her other West End credits include Equus, Heroes, The Misanthrope and The Sunshine Boys.
Clarence Darrow is performed in-the-round, in the reconfigured CGS Space.
