Carousel is Rodgers’s and Hammerstein’s much-loved musical love story between a carousel barker and a naive mill worker, starring stupendous soprano Lesley Garrett.
Originally opening on Broadway in 1945, Carousel takes a gritty, courageous and emotional look at relationships through the love affair between the smooth-talking Billy Bigelow and the young, impressionable Julie Jordan. The score of the show, voted Best Musical of its Century by Time Magazine in 1999, features tunes such as The Carousel Waltz, If I Loved You, June Is Bustin’ Out All Over and You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Garrett, who plays Nettie, is best known for her operatic prowess, but branched out into musicals when she took the role of Mother Abbess in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s revival of The Sound Of Music.
Bigelow is played by Jeremiah James of musical theatre boy band Teatro, who has also appeared in the Broadway productions of Legally Blonde: The Musical, The Full Monty and White Christmas. Alexandra Silber, who plays Jordan, previously appeared at the Savoy in the award-winning production of Fiddler On The Roof, alongside Henry Goodman.
